BEARING WITNESS

Founded by Sierra Alexis Miles, Anchored Helm is a practice that moves between observing the world and building within it. Miles began working with photography at a young age, developing a lasting commitment to documenting time and its transformation.

Through her experience in design studios, she developed a sensitivity to how perception is shaped by color—how color blocking can simplify form and obscure nuance. This insight informs her photographic work, which is presented exclusively in black and white to encourage a more deliberate and embodied engagement with each image.

As her understanding of the environment deepened, Miles pursued and earned a bachelor’s degree in architectural design as a means of making a more direct and lasting impact. Her practice evolved from observation to authorship, from bearing witness to actively shaping space.

Anchored Helm represents this evolution. The work is grounded in accountability to the present while remaining attentive to both history and future possibility. Across photography and architecture, the practice explores collective memory, everyday experience, and the quiet beauty found in both the monumental and the ordinary.
